This is easy. my current comic related nerdery can be attributed to X-Men on Fox Saturday mornings and Batman on weekday afternoons when I was a kid. And I still watch those cartoons regularly; they are timeless.

Man of Tarnished Steel, My Take On the Ending

First, if you haven’t seen Man of Steel, turn back now there be spoilers ahead!

A lot has been said about Zack Snyder and David Goyer’s controversial decision to veer far of course from what we all know about Superman’s established character and have him kill Genrel Zod. And we should talk about it! This is an important variation on the mythos and it will be a driving force behind DC’s film universe for years to come.

The epitome of this discussion is Mark Waid’s review and the ensuing backlash (read it, I’ll wait). I’m not quite sure why people are mad at him for not liking Superman killing; he’s absolutely right. This is not Superman’s character, but I don’t necessarily think that ruins the film. I actually like that Superman makes this mistake. The main issue with having compelling DC hero stories in other mediums besides comics is that a lot of them are written as infallible, in the physical sense and morally. This change makes Superman dynamic, and not perfect. I do agree with Waid’s point that they missed the mark on it though. If they had shown Superman trying to actually save people at all costs during the big battle, it would have made that moment, his worse case scenario, actually mean something instead of just being shocking. It’s only Cavil’s performance that sells that scene.

I do look forward to see where they take this franchise in the future. I am excited about Superman for the first time in a while.

“Reservoir Dolls”

This is an amazing mashup of two favorite movies of mine, Toy Story and Reservoir Dogs from graphic designer Jim Tuckwell’s “Toy Stories” series. You can see the rest and order prints on his Tumblr. He has some other cool stuff on there as well so definitely check it out.

On a side note, Google’s reverse image search is amazing. One of my biggest internet pet peeves is people posting content without a source. So when this showed up on my Facebook news feed sans citation (like always), I was able to find the artist along with all the other great stuff he had done. Proper sources aren’t just for school, kids.

DC Comics had previously announced a “Villains Month” in September, and there was also a rumor of 3D covers. Now thanks to Comic Vine we see that the two things were one and the same. Gerard Way shared some concept art over on his twitter for a pitched “Vertigo” Batman limited series that he got too busy to write. Looks pretty awesome and I would love to see him take on an existing property to see what he can do with it.

Here are some more details (taken from tweets):

So theres no confusion-[these] are from a comic I pitched to DC the year Gab and I won the Eisner. Drawn prior to CW or DXD, at home in LA.

Robin is great but I can’t find the scan. He’s more subdued because he’s the only person in the book that isn’t nuts.

Joker was also the youngest character in the book, about 19. A year or two younger than Robin.

6 issues. All one word titles. First issue is “Rats”.

There was no Harley in the book. And Catwoman was very strange.

The inside of [Batman’s] cape has a massive drawing of a magical kingdom that he made up, like his version of Heaven.

He has ESP, can turn into a bat, and can see into the future, but only he knows about these powers.

The Two Face was supposed to get a re-do. My least [favorite] outfit is great though, since he’s a cop.

Can’t find the Catwoman but let’s just say she’s very “Grey Gardens”.

Never got around to [sketching Bruce Wayne]. He’s pretty basic, though. I guess the biggest change is his mental hospital buzz cut.

Today In #DCWTF: 3D Covers!:

DC Comics has had a lot of facepalm-worthy moments lately, like all the creators leaving, firing Gail Simone and then rehiring her back, “WTF” gatefold covers (that they quickly backtracked on), releasing an epilogue before the actual conclusion to a crossover event, and the upcoming Villains Month where they’re skipping all the regular monthly books for ones focused on villains, to name just a few.

So I’ve decided to start documenting it all, starting with today’s rumor from Bleeding Cool that we will see a round of 3D covers. Bleeding Cool has a pretty good track record when it comes to rumors so I don’t doubt that this will happen. At least this won’t actually affect content like the gatefold covers and villains month. But really, DC? Why not focus a bit more on the characters and stories and less on marketing gimmicks.
